Full leather with boards framed in double gold fillet, titles and gold friezes in double fillet on the spine, raised bands, sprinkled fore-edges; octavo, 20.4 cm; pp. (2b) + (28) + 538 + (14) + (2b); slight but uniform peeling at the binding, some slightly browned gatherings. Episcopal coat of arms engraved on copper on the title page, headbands and initials (also speaking) in woodcut. First, uncommon edition, of the famous work by Menochio, published under a pseudonym, whose fortune led the author to expand it with subsequent other five volumes, published under the real name of the author. This is a collection of historical and religious narratives. “The miscellaneous topic ranges from the rivers of heaven on earth to poisonous mushrooms; from the assumptions about the negligence of the Ethiopians, to the Kabbalah explained in half a page; from the measures and provisions of the animals in Noah’s Ark, to the letters of the Virgin; from Calvin’s false miracle to the chilling chapter on the “natione de’ Zingari “which translated large excerpts from Sebastian Münster’s Cosmographia and collected heavy stereotypes from all over Europe”
